Printing a Revolution

This project explores how printed materials create spaces for protest within urban environments through field research in the Netherlands and cross-national interviews. By examining independent publishers, archives, and design teams dedicated to protest tools emerging from anarchist, leftist, and activist movements in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, and Romania, we seek to understand how print media intersects with urban landscapes to foster protest. This process involves various stages handled by multiple individuals or, in some cases, by one person who takes on multiple roles, including writing, illustrating, editing, designing, copying, distributing, reading, and providing feedback. The research will include interviews with eight groups that use print as a medium of resistance in different times and places. This writing project primarily focuses on the relationship between protest movements, urban spaces, and print media, as well as how this form of artistic production serves as a powerful tool for people to express and disseminate their political views and social concerns. Additionally, we aim to explore how these groups continue to participate in global anti-war, feminist, democratic, environmental, and other political movements.
